Applying for college and selecting the right degree is an incredibly important and difficult decision, especially for people who are not exactly sure how they picture themselves in the future. As per Harit Gaba, there are many things to think about when it comes to selecting a higher education degree. One needs to ponder over their interests, opportunities present after graduating, what’s in demand in the workforce, and so on, to make the right choice.

Harit Gaba briefly discusses some of the major factors to think of when selecting a higher education degree

Selecting the appropriate higher education pathway is often one of the toughest decisions a student has to make. Selecting the right career path can prove to be tricky, especially if one is attracted to several career pathways. There are many students who pick a major too fast and express a desire to change it soon after.  To avoid such regrets and mistakes, it is important to consider a few elements before selecting a major, such as:

  • Think about passion and interests: If one learns more about a field that they actually enjoy, they would be more motivated to work hard and may contribute to the field of study in a better manner. However, it is not always easy to identify one’s core interests. Moreover, many students have more than one interest that they feel pulled towards. It requires a certain level of introspection and an understanding of their personality to effectively identify the subjects one is truly passionate about.
  • Consider the financial implication: One of the biggest reasons why one chooses to pursue a degree program is to enjoy a lucrative career and comfortable lifestyle down the line. Prior to making any decision in regards to the higher education major, one needs to think about the pay scale they want.  However, it is important to note that if one is absolutely not interested in a certain subject; economic motivations alone might not be worth it. As interest level and economic advantage are commonly the prime contributors to selecting a college major, one has to carefully determine which of these apply to their case the most.
  • Go through the coursework: Prior to zeroing in on any major, one also has to properly assess whether or not one can effectively handle the workload associated with it. People who are already working part time or have certain family obligations have to especially consider how much time they can actually invest in their higher studies, and make a choice as per its accordance. There are many career paths that tend to be much harder than others to handle in regard to the course expectations, exam frequency, and general workload. If one is not too sure about handling the coursework, it may impact their performance later on in the program.

As per Harit Gaba, many students select a program only based on the market demand or expected salary range of its related career options. On the other hand, there are many who select a certain major because they are passionate about the field. Often, it is the combination of these two factors.
