New BBC Trust Consultation Opens

After its provisional recommendation in June that BBC Three should go online – subject to conditions – the BBC Trust is asking viewers and licence fee payers if it arrives with this recommendation.

It is particularly interested to hear views on the conditions it wishes to impose on the BBC which includes:

  • A more carefully managed transition from broadcast TV to an online service, to raise awareness of the change;
  • Clearer commitments to programmes on BBC One and/or BBC Two that appeal to a younger audience, including the use of those channels to continue broadcasting long-form BBC Three programmes; and
  • A commitment to a space on broadcast television (not just on BBC Three online) where risks can be taken with new talent and new ideas of the sort that BBC Three has been successful in developing.

The BBC Trust claims it has listened to the strength of feeling against the move – some 24,000 responses were received with a “near unanimous” conclusion. Yet it has remained supportive of the loss of BBC Three on television.

The new consultation will remain open until September 30. Those wishing to save BBC Three can fill in this pre-written email and send to the consultation through our website. Email submissions can be sent to, or alternatively users can fill in the BBC Trust’s survey.

Jono Read from the #SaveBBC3 campaign said: “We are once more urging the BBC Trust and BBC to put viewers’ opinions at the heart of this debate. We felt ignored when the Trust provisionally agreed to the BBC’s plans in June, and we think the BBC Trust’s conditions do not go far enough. While ultimately we want BBC Three to stay on TV, we think at the very least the BBC should be forced to make these changes over a longer period of time and put in place clearer commitments for BBC3 programming on BBC1&2.

We have a fight on our hands with this consultation as the BBC seem to be sweeping it under the carpet so few know about it. That’s why we have created a web form to make it as easy as possible to let the BBC Trust know our feelings about these proposals. I urge you all to sign.”

E4 mocks BBC Three in voiceover

Who would blame E4 for trying to capitalise on BBC Three moving online-only? It has been well documented that both E4 and ITV2 will benefit from the closure of BBC Three on television, and it appears to be relishing the initial recommendation from the BBC Trust.

When E4 and bosses at ITV2 are making it clear the risk BBC management is taking surely it’s time for a rethink?

BBC Trust recommends BBC3 TV axe

The BBC Trust has delivered it verdict on BBC Three – recommending approval for an online-only BBC3 from January, ignoring the views of 300,000 people who signed the #SaveBBC3 petition.

Jono Read, from the #SaveBBC3 campaign, gives his initial reaction:

“When the BBC management announced plans to close BBC Three over eighteen months ago we knew it wouldn’t be an easy task to convince them to change their minds. Like an episode of W1A they had been won over by a series of buzzwords in the offices of New Broadcasting House, with no understanding of the little appetite there would be for their plans.

I truly believed the chair of the BBC Trust when she said the viewers would be put at the heart of decision making at the BBC Trust – it’s why we kept fighting. The BBC Trust had already concluded last year the corporation was not doing enough for young people, and their last analysis of these proposals found with television still a powerful medium that audiences would end up with ITV2, E4, and Sky. Even bosses admit viewership will drop.

It is disappointing today that the BBC has not truly listened. The BBC management did not engage significantly with the future licence fee payers over this matter, probably because they knew what their response would be.

How can they try to launch a new service to rival the likes of BuzzFeed and VICE with a reduced budget rather than investment? And what incentive is there for new talent work with an online-only BBC3?

Today’s choices did not have to be a clear cut as yes or no. There were other options on the table. I am a big fan of keeping the BBC public, but when it comes to axing a channel off television there should have been more thought given to the offer to buy. With the BBC losing the rights to the Olympics this week it will also potentially leave a big pot of money unspent that could have been used to invest in young people.

Instead the Director General’s priority has been a BBC1+1 (now rejected) that would bring no further additional viewers than the innovative service he has chosen to axe from the TV screens. He proposed doing this because he said he didn’t want to “salami slice” the budget, but I can only conclude today that he will do just that. The online service – with fewer viewers – will not offer the value for money this exercise was meant to achieve.

The #SaveBBC3 campaign will keep fighting. We believe the BBC needs to inspire a generation rather than losing one. A 28-day consultation now follows, and we plan to make our voices heard as loudly as possible. The BBC Trust today hasn’t listened – we plan to make sure by the end of this consultation they do.”

New campaign videos launched

The #SaveBBC3 campaign has launched two new videos to promote what’s best about BBC Three. The first focuses on the entertainment side of the channel, while the second promotes the live music and festival coverage, which could cease to exist if BBC3 leaves TV.

Please share this widely to help make the case for fighting to #SaveBBC3.

Bosses’ vision for BBC3 comedies will be short clips

At a ‘tense’ meeting today between BBC bosses and independent comedy producers it was suggested that an ‘online’ BBC3 would start to focus on short shareable comedy clips to meet an overall smaller budget for BBC3.

Today’s meeting, Broadcast Magazine reports, was a heated one from both sides. BBC bosses including the Director of Television Danny Cohen and BBC3 controller Damian Kavanagh revealed that the direction would instead head towards short videos that could be easily shared online.

Panel shows including some sitcom comedies could be off the menu if the proposals are given the ‘green light’ in the Autumn.

Just 1% of the BBC’s budget is spent on BBC3’s target audience. This would be cut to 0.6% under the proposals… unless BBC3 is saved. Campaigners believe if the proposals go ahead this will mark the end of the programming we all know and love.

Over 290,000 people have signed the #SaveBBC3 petition at and there is still a chance the proposals can be stopped. An initial proposal as to whether these plans are approved or not is expected this month.

Two producers that are helping the fight are Jimmy Mulville and Jon Thoday who have written in the Independent today lambasting BBC management. It can be read in full detail here.

Last week BBC Free Speech tweeted that it’s online accounts were being wound down, and that there were no plans to return to BBC3 in the near future.

  • The BBC has promised to provide further information about its proposals to clarify the future of favourite shows.

Creative industry calls on Trust to #SaveBBC3

An open letter to the BBC Trust from more than 750 people in the creative industry is set to be delivered to the organisation today.

Put together by Hat Trick Productions and Avalon, with the support of the #SaveBBC3 campaign, the letter includes celebrity support from the likes of Olivia Colman, Daniel Radcliffe, Maxine Peake, Poldark’s Aidan Turner, Game of Thrones star Lena Headey, and James Nesbitt.

Joining comedians Russell Howard, Jack Whitehall, Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Andy Samberg and Greg Davies are TV executives, agents, and writers too. Andrew Davies – who wrote the Colin Firth adaptation of Pride and Prejudice – and Jimmy McGovern, writer of BBC2’s Banished.

The letter describes the channel as a place where “some of the most successful and influential names currently working in British television were given their first chance”. It adds: “BBC3 has cost the licence fee payer over £1bn over the last 10 years. Closure will write off this investment, which would be unthinkable in a commercial environment.”

“Either the BBC can continue to cater for an increasingly elderly audience, or it can take the lead and safeguard its position as a beloved and relevant public broadcaster by investing in the talent and the audiences who are the building blocks of the future. Safeguarding the future of BBC3 as it currently exists is the key to this.”

#SaveBBC3 Event – Talent lines up to fight move

Stars from the creative industry rallied together tonight to discuss the BBC’s proposals to take BBC3 off our television screens. Unsurprisingly they believe the move would be the wrong one to make, and are calling on the BBC to #SaveBBC3.

#SaveBBC3 event taking place in London

The BBC Trust are expected to make a decision on the future of BBC3 staying on television very shortly. As I wrote recently, this whole process has been very frustrating with the BBC seemingly dismantling the channel in front of our eyes without a mandate to do so. Some speculate the Trust might approve the closure of the channel, but now a group in the media industry are showing there is a third outcome which could happen. They are looking to buy the channel to keep it on television and to continue to invest in the channel at a time when the BBC is proposing taking it off our screens and cutting the budgets.

We all agree the best outcome would be for the BBC Trust to reject the BBC’s plans for BBC3, and I will not stop fighting for that to happen, but I am interested to hear more about Hat Trick Production’s proposals for the channel that would keep it on our television screens. Tomorrow night (Monday) we have an opportunity to do this at an event hosted in London. I am keen to get some of our campaign supporters there to learn more.

That’s why Hat Trick Productions have opened up the invitation to myself and #SaveBBC3 supporters. Taking place at 7pm, the event will be hosted by the Guardian’s Steve Hewlett, and will be an open discussion about what BBC3 could become if the BBC Trust were to consider the alternative options. Hat Trick’s movement is growing with a number of agents, producers, production companies, and BBC3 stars backing it.

So if you’re in London tomorrow night and would be interested in attending to represent our campaign please get back to me ASAP with some detail about who you are and why you support the campaign. We will then select a handful of people to go along in the next 24 hours.

If you can’t make the event you can find out more information about their proposals at, and I will keep you updated as we enter an important time for the campaign. Remember to keep expressing your views on social media using #savebbc3!
